The First Filipino Student Activist

DOWN WITH THE DEAD LANGUAGES!
by: Attorney Felipe Buencamino, Sr.

(Remarks to his fellow students of Sto. Tomas University way back in 1869, on the occasion of an ovation for having recited in Spanish instead of in the Latin customary for non-Spanish students; the speech earned him four months in Bilibid Prison whence he was pardoned by the new liberal governor-general; in Calle San Juan de Letran, Manila, Feb. 1, 1869.)

I say with Doctor Regidor, "Down with Latin!" Our textbook is in Latin but it ought to be in Spanish. We are Spanish subjects and we ought to study in the language of our country. We are studying this Roman Law to fit ourselves for the legal profession and lawyers here, just the same as in Spain, practice their profession in Spanish and never in Latin. Hurrah for Spanish and down with Latin! (p. 29, "Gems of Philippine oratory" by Austin Craig)
